Tell the service time.
Tell something about your church.
Tell people the gospel.
Provide witnesses.
Write blog for non-believers.
Be a platform for people share pray request.
Regularly update church news.
Post event arrangement in advance.
Put downloadable sermon audio files on.
Build an online community.
Post the serve opportunity.
Provide RSS feed.

Efficiently collect content for church website

Content is the king for a church website. Your users only come and keep coming back to your website for the content on it. Therefore, to make your church website success you must feed users with good quality content. The rules of thumb are:

1. Start from user’s position
2. Make it simple
3. Go legal

Start from user’s position

The reason for church to have a website is that they could serve their members better, more efficiently and influence more unbelievers. There might be tons of information about your church that you want to put on the church website. To be efficient, you need to start content collect process from user’s position. Think of what your users really need. For instance, a new visitor might want to see your church service time and a map on your church website and some basic introductive information as well. On the other hand, your congregation members might want to see last sermon audio files because he missed it.

Make it simple

People don’t like read long paragraph on the web page. Use simple and common terms so that people can understand. Your congregation members might know YC means Youth center or Youth Campus of your church but a new comer will certainly get lost at this. If you need to post long content on the website, make sure the first 1 or 2 paragraphs are dedicated to give the summary about the following content.

Go legal

It is common sense but it is worth to mention it. Before put any information on the church website you need to make sure you have the right to put it up. If you do not have the right you need to ask for permission. Illegal content will surely damage the church image.

Church website structure is very im<x>portant for site users to locate the information they want and find their way to do the things they intend to do. Good site structure design will definitely make your church website more user-friendly thus increase your church website’s impact. I would like to share an effective yet easy way to design your church website structure. We can divide the process into 3 steps:
1. Brainstorm what topics will put on the site
2. Group the similar topics together
3. Come up with the category name for each group

Brainstorm
Whether you hire a company to develop the church website or do it in house, to have a group of people from your church work on the planning part is strongly suggested. Because this early involvement will ensure the finished website really suit for your church situation and bring more brilliant ideas to make your website better.

During the brainstorm session make sure to focus on the topics you want the website to cover, not the detailed content. Plus be sure to come up with a short, describable name for the topic. For instance one person says the website needs to have a page to share the gospel, you can write it down on the whiteboard and afterwards discuss about what is a good name for this page.

Group topics
I suggest you write the topic names discussed at brainstorm session on the small piece of pages or cards. Each card has one topic name written on it. You can make the card yourself by cut A4 papers into smaller pieces. Follow that, you can group the similar topics into one category by move the card around.

Name the group
After you have agreed on the topic group, you need to come up with a name for the group. The group name needs to be short and informative thus site users will be easily told what kind of information they could find under the group.

Finally you need to put the information into the computer for communication and future reference. You can file it into excel or word document any file format you and your people understand it will do. If you are interested you could check out freemind(http://freemind.sourceforge.net).

One of the common pitfalls for website structure design is that it has too many levels that the information is buried in the deep structure. It is recommended to have no more than 2 levels in your structure tree.

For people who might be interested, I was a Christian baptized in year 2004. When I was a child I dream of being able to do something related to programming though at that time I did not even know what a computer is. While things does not go as I expected instead of learning Computer science I majored in other subjects in my vocational school and college.
